First Dates

“You’re vegetarian?” Stefan asked. Cool, handsome, and funny, Stefan was her longtime crush. Safiya agreed on a date even though she knew it wouldn’t go anywhere. It couldn’t. Could it?

“Oh, no!” she giggled. “It’s just that the food here isn’t halal. So… vegetarian options, you know.”

“Oh Christ, I didn’t even think of that!”

He may have used Jesus name in vain, but she was pretty sure he was Jewish. She imagined Mama’s despairing disapproval, “Why Saffa? Why?”

Stefan winked and said, “Next time, you choose the restaurant.”

Next time?! Safiya’s heart soared.

I hope you enjoyed this little scene out of the romantic comedy script that I’ll never write.

I didn’t get to everyone’s posts the last time, because I was busy moving house. Let’s just say, I never want to move house again anytime soon. I hope to catch up on posts and comments and do better this week!

That’s so true, Sandra. If only we could be more accommodating of our differences.

Lovely story, and well crafted. I like the way the story seems to be about food, and faith, and is then resolved by pure physical attraction. A very modern love story!

I don’t read much romance (though I do enjoy romantic comedy movies). So it’s odd how I still end up writing romance. I like stories that show the human heart cannot be contained behind rules and man-made regulations.

I thought this was an adorable story. I love how you use these little details to build the tension and then to resolve it. They may not be lovers for life, but they’re definitely on the way to something interesting!

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. Yes, I was building a little tension! I love that you felt it. At least they’re exploring out of their comfort zones.

The problem with the parents still remains… but as long as they agree I think it will work out.. and vegetarian is not a bad compromise.
